Electric Vehicle Charger at holiday cottage

Several locations nearby have an EV charger but here all you need do is take a few steps from your front door and the stress of Electric Vehicle Anxiety disappears. It’s simple – you can relax in the comfort of your home from home holiday cottage in East Devon while your car charges up.

It is just one of the small steps that we’ve taken to try to decrease our impact on the environment and be more sustainable.

And these too –

  • LED light bulbs in the cottages .
  • Eco Friendly products are used wherever possible.
  • Upcycle and recycle.
  • Encouraged everyone to sort their ‘rubbish’ in line with East Devon County Council’s recycling policy.
  • Support local businesses.
  • When something needs replacing we look for energy efficiency and sustainability first and foremost.
The blankets are made from recycled plastic bottles

Twin bedded room in Weathervane Cottage

Soft and cosy blankets made from recycled plastic bottles enhance the single beds in Weathervane and Meadow Cottages. To reduce paper waste we’ll send you a digital guide explaining how everything works as well as giving plenty of suggestions for places to visit, things to do and where to eat delicious, locally produced, food.

The original farm barns, that were converted into the holiday cottages, were built with thick stone walls helping to keep them cool in summer and warm in winter. When we added the Apple Loft, a romantic bolt-hole for two, it was constructed to building regulations and is very well insulated.

We’ve had a lot of fun hunting around local auction rooms. As a result Apple Loft has a mix of contemporary fixtures and fittings with plenty of vintage ‘finds’ thrown in.

Reconditioned bedstead and old steps from a boat

Bedstead & boat steps in Apple Loft

An Edwardian washstand has been transformed into the hall table. An old campaign chest provides storage. Some steps from a boat have become shelves. Hiding under the bed is a leather suitcase where you’ll find a wool blanket. The wrought iron bedstead was reconditioned and painted, but we drew the line at using an old mattress!

During the covid lockdowns we couldn’t host holiday makers so we used our time productively to refresh the accommodations. We started with the furnishings in Garden Cottage, Meadow Cottage and Weathervane Cottage. Some pieces were beginning to show their age and were replaced and, I’m pleased to say, re-homed – nothing went to waste – and many items were given a new look with a simple coat of paint.

A car is useful as we’re located in the beautiful countryside of the Blackdown Hills but you don’t need to depend on it.  Supermarkets deliver to our postcode. Great walks straight from the front doors. Entertainment from the birds that visit the garden. Two local pubs that can be included in circular walks making them perfect stopping off places for lunch or a pint of local Otter ale.

Do come and visit as a very warm welcome awaits you at Twistgates Farm Cottages.
