Start shopping …

With the festive season and Christmas in mind weekend breaks in Devon are the ideal way to get in the mood and start your preparations. Exeter Cathedral is the magnificent back drop for the traditional Christmas market that runs through December and even nearer, in Honiton, the Thelma Hulbert gallery will be hosting the Present Makers exhibition where you can buy unusual and individual gifts made by West Country artists.

Get in the festive spirit …

To delight all ages the West Somerset Railway has a wonderful selection of winter themed trips – Winterlights, Dunster by Candlelight, Santa Express as well as Festive Afternoon Teas. Also on the move Stuart Line run a Festive Special Cruise  and, very special for children, is the Seaton Tramway Polar Express.

Agatha Christie fans might be interested in Christmas at Greenway, where part of the house will be decorated in a festive way that the authoress would recognise. For magical illuminated walks check out Hestercombe Gardens and Powerham Castle, and many of the National Trust properties in the area have plans for the festive season too.

When you combine a special event and a self catering holiday at Twistgates Farm Cottages you can also include walking in the surrounding country lanes, or a blustery stroll along the nearby Jurassic Coast, a fireside lunch in a local pub or dinner at one of our favourite restaurants.

Alternatively you can turn your back on the whole razzmatazz of the festivities, close the door on the world and hunker down with a good book by the fireside and enjoy peace, quiet and complete relaxation.
